The Macular Society in Eastbourne hosted a talk on the symptoms and risks associated with type 2 diabetes.
Consultant ophthalmologist Shahram Kashani, who is a leading specialist in retina health, and Dr David Lipscombe, a diabetologist, delivered a talk on recent research and medical thinking on the subject.
Local Macular Society group leaders, Graham and Ann Household said, “As a charitable society for people affected by any form of macular disease or macular degeneration it is important to keep up to date on the latest developments on the treatment of AMD.
“Organising these experts to deliver informative talks is always well received – the meeting was exceptionally well attended and Mr Kashani and Dr Lipscombe delivered a very interesting talk.”
Mr. Kashani said, “I am always happy to speak to members of the local macular society. Diabetes is a growing issue in the UK and diabetic retinopathy is one of the most common causes of visual loss in the working age population of the UK.” The macula is part of the retina. It is no bigger than a grain of rice and is responsible for all of our central vision.
There are many forms of macular disease.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common.
Eastbourne’s Macular Society is a specialist charity that meets four times a year to raise awareness of the condition, give sufferers advice and support, and raise funds.
The next Eastbourne Macular Society talk will be given by Fazilet Hadi, director at the RNIB, and will cover the work of the charity. This meeting will take place at the Old Parsonage, Eastbourne Parish Church, on Monday, July 11.
